16 January 2023
The Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) has announced its ‘Merit Medal’ recipients for the recently concluded eleventh season, ‘Nature’. 20 photographers have been recognised for their submissions across the season’s categories. Each of them will be awarded with the HIPA Merit Medal along with a copy of HIPA’s annual book.
Commenting on this announcement, the Secretary General of HIPA, Ali Bin Thalith said, “We award these medals in appreciation and honour to the photographers who presented distinguished works that deserve to reach the final stages of arbitration, so the Board of Trustees of the award decided to present this well-deserved tribute to them as a kind of motivation and recognition of the serious competitiveness of their participating works, and we are happy that 3 Arab photographers received this honour, an indication of the continuous development and seriousness of Arab photographers in dealing with the art of photography and its techniques.
Bin Thalith added, “ Based on the results of the judging process, which was led by a group of world renowned photographers and members of the industry, a selection of formidable photos were selected to be recognised and honoured.
Of the 20 recipients, 5 were from the ‘Nature’ category, 5 from the ‘Portfolio’ category, and 6 across the ‘General’ category (3 for ‘Colour’ and 3 for ‘Black and White’), along with 4 from the ‘Portrait’ category.”
The HIPA Merit Medals are polished nickel-plated pieces of art with a diameter of 15 cm and the name of HIPA is engraved on them in both languages. The medal was designed by the Emirati artist and member of the HIPA's board of trustees, Matar bin Lahej, and was made by Thomas Fattorini in the United Kingdom.
